Cold Steel Drop Forged Survivalist

The Cold Steel Drop Forged Surivalist is a large Bowie knife made from a solid piece of 52100 High Carbon steel. 52100 High Carbon steel is a favorite of many knife makers because it has great properties for knives, such as high toughness and pleasant sharpening properties. Where many knife blades are made by sanding a sheet of metal into the shape of a knife, this knife is forged. That means the metal is beaten into its final shape. This can be done manually, with a hammer on an anvil, but can also be done with the aid of a powerful mechanical hammer. In this case, the latter option was chosen, in which the piece of unformed steel was placed in a mold with a strong blow and formed. This process, known as drop forging, is much less labour-intensive than manual forging, but offers some of the same benefits.

- The high force exerted on the steel by the hammer compacts the crystalline structure of the steel. This makes the steel tougher and more wear-resistant.

- A knife that is forged in its entirety, such as the Drop Forged Hunter, consists of a single piece. This makes it a very sturdy whole that can be damaged very little.

- Die forging is a very economically advantageous way of working due to the relatively small number of actions required to make a complete knife. This gives you a high-quality but affordable product.

Although the handle, guard and blade of the Survivalist are for the most part forged from a single piece of steel, they have chosen to inlay the handle with FRN (Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon) grips for this large knife. These handles have a pleasantly rough texture, which gives them an exceptionally good grip, which is very important with a knife of this size! In addition, these handles give the survivalist a very comfortable, hand-filling grip, without the knife becoming too heavy.
To prevent rust on the steel, the entire knife (except the handles) has been given a dark blue powder coating. The blade of the survivalist measures 20 cm and has a classic Bowie shape. It is 6 millimeters thick at the back and therefore has enough weight to be able to chop effectively. Due to the completely flat grind, the geometry is also suitable for somewhat finer, more precise cutting tasks. An optimal combination!

The Drop Forged Survivalist comes complete with the solid Secure-Ex sheath that we are used to from Cold Steel knives. The combination of the powder-coated, forged blade and the synthetic sheath make it a low-maintenance, high-quality whole.
